Helping Hands Children Services is proud to announce that through our partnership with Relias Online Learning Academy, many parents have the opportunity to attend our workshops from the privacy of their own home. We understand that many families often have busy schedules, with the use of Relias, parents may further their education about many topics pertaining to their loved one. Our topics include, but are not limited to:
Overview of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Discrete Trial, & Behavior Management Strategies
This workshop will provide families with a basic understanding of the theory and methodology behind empirically validated interventions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Furthermore, the goal of this workshop is to help families understand the various functions of maladaptive behavior, and teach them more effective ways to manage challenging situations.
Autism & Family Stress
This workshop will provide families with an overview of the current research literature on families of children with special needs. The goal of this seminar is to foster understanding and awareness between family members, and to provide strategies to buffer the family stress that often results from having a child diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Social Stories & Social Skills Training
This workshop will educate parents about Social Stories interventions and their use in teaching social skills and managing problem behaviors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Furthermore, parents will be provided with the skills necessary to write their own Social Stories and foster appropriate social skills in their child.
Alternative Communication & Verbal Behavior
This workshop aims to provide parents with a foundation of knowledge in Verbal Behavior Theory, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communication devices, and the skills necessary to foster functional communication in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Surviving Puberty: Tips for Parents of Adolescents with Autism
Perhaps nothing is as unpredictable as teenage behavior. Parents with teenage children with autism spectrum disorders often face additional challenges as their adolescent children enter puberty. This presentation will assist parents in identifying characteristics of teenagers with autism spectrum disorders and identify strategies to teach age appropriate functional, personal and social skills that may promote home, school, and community inclusion.
Promoting Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Individuals with autism spectrum disorders often have difficulty engaging in social interactions. This free workshop will provide an overview of strategies for increasing social skills in children with autism.
Planning Vacations & Summer Recreation for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
This seminar provides useful tips and strategies for planning a successful vacation, field trips and summer recreational activities for children on the autism spectrum. Learn ideas for creative recreational activities and how to incorporate therapeutic goals.
Tackling Eating Issues: Taking the Stress Out of Meal Times
Does your child's diet consist of chicken nuggets, fries, pizza and Cheerios? Does your child only eat white foods? Do you dread mealtime because it means a battle of behaviors with your child? Then this workshop is for you! Parents will get tips and strategies on successful eating interventions that may work with their child, including video footage illustrating its effectiveness with other children.
How to Handle the Holidays
An overview of the common signs of stress in children will be delivered as well as a presentation of general strategies for parents dealing with holiday stress. Specific strategies for children with ADD/ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders will be discussed.
